Dubai Frame
This architectural marvel designed by Fernando Donis is UAE’s latest cultural landmark. Standing at 150 meters (nearly 500 feet) and containing 48 floors, it allows visitors spectacular sunset views of Dubai’s city skyline. Its three venues—Old, Present, and Future Dubai—bridge the emirates’ rich past with its magnificent present. They also celebrate its ambitious development plans for the future through visually stunning displays and installations.
The Old Dubai Gallery is for those who want to know more about the city’s rapid transformation from a bustling fishing village to the modern metropolis that it is now. Present Dubai boasts of a sky deck, where you can get an uninterrupted view of the older north and newer south side of the city. On the other hand, you can go through a swirling tunnel with audio and visual effects at the Future Dubai Gallery.
Constructing the Dubai Frame was no walk in the park. Standing in Zabeel Park close to the Star Gate, it is considered the largest frame in the world. Its design won the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award. Two thousand tons of steel were used to build the center structure, while 9,900 cubic meters (349,615.2 ft3) of reinforced concrete were used to create the base and legs of the frame.
An additional 2,900 square meters (31,215.3 ft2) of laminated glass was incorporated. And the more than 15,000 square meters (161,458.7 ft2) of gold-colored stainless steel on the outside gives the frame its eye-catching, polished appearance. The golden steel features a ring design inspired by the Expo 2020 Dubai logo. The rectangular design itself follows the 1.618 ‘golden ratio’ that many architects and artists believe is the basis of an ideal structural balance.
The building boasts of a luminous glass walkway high above the ground, panoramic lifts, hierarchical interactive screens, viewing areas of the city’s landmarks and tourist destinations, and a great view of the dancing musical fountain. Even its elevator is a structural masterpiece, capable of reaching the 48th floor in only 75 seconds. You can also hang out at the coffee shop on the top floor.
